Groups protest chemicals used in Apple’s iPhone

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple’s labor practices are under attack by two activist groups who contend the company makes its iPhones with a hazardous mix of chemicals that threaten the health of factory workers assembling the devices in China.

The campaign began Wednesday with an online petition put together by China Labor Watch, a longtime Apple critic, and Green America, an environmental protection group.

Apple CEO Tim Cook teases, reassures shareholders

CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) — Apple CEO Tim Cook is still trying to convince shareholders that the iPhone maker remains a step ahead in the race to innovate, even though recent performance of the company’s stock lags behind other technology trendsetters.

In making his case Friday, Cook struck a familiar refrain during Apple’s annual shareholder meeting at the company’s Cupertino, Calif. headquarters.

Apple, Samsung fail to settle before March trial

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. have failed to settle their latest patent dispute despite a daylong meeting between top Samsung executives and Apple CEO Tim Cook hosted by a mediator earlier this month.

The companies detailed the lack of progress in a court filing Friday. Judge Lucy Lucy Koh of the U.S. District Court in San Jose has been pushing the two sides to settle the 2-year-old case.
